Respectful & Cute: Dressing Kids for Balinese Ceremonies
Bali's culture is deeply spiritual, and you'll likely encounter ceremonies, processions, or visit one of the island's magnificent temples during your stay. It's a beautiful learning opportunity for kids.
However, temples are sacred spaces, and "beach attire" is a big no-no. So, how do you dress a hot, wiggly toddler respectfully without them melting down?
The Basic Rules of Temple Dress
For adults and children alike, the general rule is modesty.
- Shoulders covered (No singlets).
- Legs covered (Sarong required).
- Waist sash (Selendang).
Adapting for Kids
Balinese people love children and are generally lenient with very young ones (babies/toddlers), but dressing your school-aged kids respectfully is a great sign of appreciation for the culture.
Here is the perfect "Temple Outfit" formula:
1. The Top: A Crisp Muslin Shirt
A white or light-colored button-up top is standard for ceremonies (known as Kebaya for women/girls and Safari shirt for men/boys). For tourists, a clean, white linen or muslin t-shirt looks smart, respectful, and keeps them cool.
2. The Sarong (Kain)
You don't need to buy a fancy traditional one. A simple batik cloth wrapped around their waist covers their legs. Tip: If your child refuses a sarong, long loose trousers are usually acceptable, but a sash is still needed.
3. The Sash (Selendang)
This is the tie around the waist. It separates the upper (pure) body from the lower (impure) body in Hindu belief. It's a non-negotiable for entering the inner sanctums of temples. Bright colors like yellow or pink look adorable on kids!
Where to Get Them?
Most major temples (like Uluwatu or Tanah Lot) rent sarongs and sashes at the entrance. However, buying a small sarong at a local market is a fun activity and makes for a great souvenir/picnic blanket later!
Behavior Tips
- Don't point your feet at the altars when sitting.
- Don't climb on shrines or statues (tempting for kids, but disrespectful).
- Keep voices low.
