A newborn really needs a handful of onesies, a couple of simple sets, a soft hat for the first few weeks, pajamas for sleep, and one hooded towel for after baths. Muslin cotton works well because its open weave stays breathable and gets softer with every wash. A few well-made pieces cover most of the newborn stage.

We get this question a lot: what do you actually need before the baby arrives? Not much, honestly. A small stack of soft, breathable basics gets you through the newborn stage better than a closet full of things you'll never use.
The everyday base layer, easy to get on and off fast during the newborn haze.
A simple top and bottom for days when you want baby dressed, not just covered.
A bit of warmth on top for the first few weeks, when babies chill easily.
Soft enough for sleep, with a bit more warmth than a single layer on cooler nights.
One good hooded towel makes bath time a lot less chaotic.

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry low or hang to dry. Skip fabric softener and high heat, and expect a little creasing, that's normal for this weave.
