The best fabric for a baby in hot, humid weather is a breathable natural fibre with an open weave, so heat and sweat can escape. Muslin cotton is our pick: it is loosely woven, lightweight, quick-drying and softens with washing, which keeps skin cooler and drier than heavier or synthetic fabrics.

Fabric matters more than almost anything else for a comfortable baby in the heat. Synthetics trap sweat, and heavy knits hold warmth. What you want is a light, natural, loosely woven fabric that moves air against the skin — which is exactly what muslin does.

For heat, yes — muslin’s open weave lets more air through than a denser jersey knit, so it feels cooler and dries faster. Jersey is stretchier and warmer, which is better for cool weather than tropical heat.
Synthetics like polyester don’t breathe as well and can trap sweat against the skin, which is uncomfortable in hot, humid weather. A breathable natural fibre is the more comfortable choice for tropical climates.
